We're getting pretty far on a binge for Mario Kart, which at least seems to take its toll on me sooner than Brawling does, but it can be perhaps even more addictive by hanging a carrot out on a stick after a bunch of quick races...and then all the sudden the time has run away on you. "Just one more, one more to see if I can't do better!"

Peach
Wild Wing

Of course, since this is the same session as the last race in the previous video after all the battling was called to a close...I still wish I could change freely, because it definitely is a hassle to drop out and seek a new match just for the sake of a vehicle and character combination, and as you might have noticed, it also of course has the side effect of often separating you from your previous group. Though it is nice that you will see that it's easy to join up with a friend already in a room, it just causes a little unnecessary speed bump in the process.

Race #1 -- Daisy Circuit

So after the first race, we can see that Peach (marinaneon2) has wandered back in, which is the nice thing I was talking about making it really easy to join up with a friend taking part in races or battles in a room already in progress.

I seem to do fairly well compared to other races, although a handful of really weird things happen:

I have no idea why I would throw a fake item block to the track ahead of me where I know nobody will show up, as the one person ahead of me took the other direction on the fork...I'm even more surprised to see that I actually hit someone.

I have no idea what possessed me to try to take the shortcut with no boost, I guess I just must've underestimated the slowing effect of the staircase, since it's treated as off-road conditions.

I need to STOP nicking corners like that. Seriously. How or why I thought my racing line was acceptable is absolutely beyond me.

---

Race #2 -- N64 Bowser's Castle

I noticed in this stretch of matches alone, a lot of people requested this track and we got it at least a couple of times...I mean I get that it's a popular one and all, but once you go there, maybe you race on some other tracks for a while, eh? I know, I know, you do NOT apply logic to cases like these, obviously, but it's still wishful thinking on my part for a little more thinking and consideration.

This one was, I believe, the first and also the most interesting of the bunch of repeat course visits, anyway. Oh, and we can see that K-Upgrade (Artrocks93) has returned, of course...he made quite the impression from where I sat at several points of the race.

Apparently I have a hard time picking out the visual signs of banana peels on the final race across the ramparts.

Also, I see in hindsight that I keep taking those ridiculous corners...it's a wonder I didn't hit one of them and get snagged.

---

Race #3 -- DS Peach Gardens

I'm not entirely sure why, but I really do like a good race through the garden, tending to the pets, running over a molehill or two.

Those...CORNERS. Well, more to the point...that...DRIVER! You may notice a couple of other times when my racing lines going into turns were just awful, and twice I didn't even stop myself, causing some rather untimely time lost.

---

Race #4 -- DS Delfino Square

I'm not entirely sure why, but this was probably my favorite track in Mario Kart DS...the music, the setting, the act of careening through narrow alleyways...I honestly can't say what it is I like so much, much like with Peach Gardens.

You'll notice at one point, I must've been a little gun-shy after Upgrade pushed me off the narrow Bowser's Castle rope bridge...I shied away in perhaps the most self-destructive of ways.

It's a shame, really, I know the course a little too well for my own good (still doesn't stop the self-destructive cornering insanity of mine from getting in the way once in a while), but I suppose on the other hand that I don't really feel like I've got anything really further to prove about it all, I just have my own demons to conquer about being weird on the consistency aspect.

I wonder if one of these days I shouldn't just hit the time trials...not for the sake of doing an attempted speed run on a course or anything, but just to make sure I can drill it into my head where I should start drifting and when on which vehicles...I don't know if I'm that hard a case just yet, but maybe that's the sign that I really do need some extra practice.

  • Ah yes, N64 Bowser's Castle. I quite often run into people who pick this stage again and again. They usually do well here too, so I get the feeling this is their "best course" and are picking it again and again because it gives them the likeliest chance of winning. That and it's almost nothing but straightaways, making it great to wheelie from beginning to end. Let me guess--Tobi is one of the ones picking it constantly? Or whoever his partner is...

Also, why did you withhold on the Mushroom?

  • @Overhazard It actually turned out to be a coincidence, upon reviewing the raw footage, Tobi left immediately after that race and it had been selected as N64 Bowser's Castle by random chance. It was someone else entirely who didn't enter until after that race who kept picking it until we went there again.

I honestly can't figure out why I do some weird things like that, but I'll have to chalk it up to being preoccupied thinking about something else, passing up item use opportunities sometimes.

  • @YuuGiJoou Did they continue to pick N64 Bowser's Castle even after you raced there?

I think you could've placed 2nd overall, or eve 1st in N64 Bowser's Castle if you used the Mushroom. That and if you didn't hit the corner.
