@egusmc1 They are the Sappers, which are the combat engineers that traditionally "cleared the way" for the rest of the Legion. The dangers of the job gave them privileges, such as beards. The aprons, leather gloves, and axes, were all tools of this traditional task.

I had the great honour to train with 2 Etrangere Parachutiste(2REP)in the '60's. Camp Rafali, Corsica. They were the bravest of the brave. We celebrated Camerone Day with them. What a blast.
