You either get the joke or you don't. EXPAND for explanation:
The real answer if you are curious is simple: The briefcase is used as a literary device called a McGuffin (coined by Alfred Hitchcock). Its simply an object(or whatever) that moves the story along while being completely meaningless and irrelevant what it actually is. Its explaining does not in any way change the plot so it is purposely never explained in detail because it is essentially meaningless.
Like Hitchcock's The 39 steps, or Rosebud in Citizen Kane, it drives a plotline while the answer ultimately has no effect on the plot of the movie.
Of course both the 39 steps and Rosebud are given a superficial explaination at the end of those films (ones a spy ring, the other a sleigh: Maybe representing a cross roads in the characters life where he could of been a different man) the briefcase in Pulp Fiction is actually a Purer example because it is intentionally not explained.
It is nothing and there is no ultimate secret. It just used as a way to progress a storyline along. That is its only purpose and there is no other DEEPER meaning.
It is truly nothing. Which means the audience can make it absolutely anything: including the preposterous and ridiculous idea of Marcellus' soul and even Elvis Presley's suit (granted the Elvis suit makes more sense but still has no evidence to support it. At least the soul idea has evidence- all of which has already been explained by the filmmakers as having nothing to do with his soul).
But don't take my word for it: Just look up the definition for McGuffin. Considering most people aren't writers or filmmakers many do not know this COMMON technique. But it is real so feel free to research and learn.
The more responses i get to this the more I realize people don't even know cliched techniques they see in films daily. Like most don't even know what a Stinger is in a horror film. I guess ignorance is sometimes the best excuse to argue about things though.
There's no need to get nasty. Whether we agree or disagree in interpretations, we can still be respectful. It seems we all share one thing, an appreciation for the film. And its fun to have these discussions. Even if we feel someone is wrong and can't see their views. BTW MrMovieAnalyst I changed my mind and did watch your video. Its good- I recommend others to check it out. I think it reads too much into the film, but i did find it interesting. My video is just joking around.
