Maldivian President in Sri Lanka 02-01 09

President of the Maldives Mohammed Nasheed arrives in the island to further strengthen ties with Sri Lanka. He is the first head of state to visit the country in the New Year......On arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport for a two-day official visit, he was welcomed by his Sri Lankan counterpart and First Lady Shiranthie Rajapakse. Mohammed Nasheed assumed power in November last year. This is his first visit to Sri Lanka. He is in the island at the invitation of President Rajapakse. A special military guard of honour was accorded to him. There was a red carpet welcome to the visiting leader. The Maldivian President is accompanied by First Lady Laila Ali, Foreign Minister Dr.Ahamed Saheed, Finance Minister Ali Hasheem, Health Minister Dr. Aminath Janeel, Trade Minister Mohammed Razik and Special Presidential Representative Ibrahim Hussein. Many Parliamentarians were at the airport to welcome the Maldivian leader. He met Minister Rohitha Bogollagama this afternoon. Thereafter he had talks with President Rajapakse on economic, cultural, trade and tourism fields. He is due to meet Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickremanayake and Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena during his stay. Tomorrow, he will have discussions with the SME sector.
