Benedict XVI visited the tomb of one of the most famous saints of the 20th century, Padre Pio.

The pope prayed before the saints remains and before the relic of his heart.

He also visited cell number one of the capuchin friary where the saint died in 1968.

It all took place during a one day visit to San Giovanni Rotondo, Padre Pios hometown. Benedict celebrated Mass there for 50,000 people.

The pope said Padre Pio understood perfectly the meaning of suffering because he was a person of profound faith. Thats why he warned the devout and the saints followers that they will not live authentic charity if they are not also people of intense prayer.

Padre Pio had to fight, above all, not against territorial enemies, but against the spirit of evil. The biggest tempests that threatened him were assaults from the devil, and he defended himself with the armor of God and the shield of faith.

After leading the Angelus prayer following the Mass, the pope called on the international community to not overlook the plight of refugees. World Refugee Day is marked each year at this time.

So many people seek refuge in other places, fleeing situations of war, persecution and calamity. Although its very difficult, its a duty to help them.

Here in this place where everything speaks of the life of St. Padre Pio, the pope described the saint as a model for the Year for Priests. He was a great witness to the importance of prayer, closeness to people and generosity, and he was famous for spending most of his day hearing confessions.

  • Simple. If you did nothing to get it you can do nothing ot lose it. But if u got it by human effort u must keep it by human effort. Read Phil2.6, Jude 24 and tell me what u think.

  • @j919or Who told you that we preach a false gospel, that we can sanctify ourselves by human effort?

  • @Savages ""followers of Satan who attack the Catholic Church""

The RCC is a false church of satan and its ironic that you would call attackers of the RCC followers of satan. The RCC teaches the false gospel of salvation and sanctification by human effort

They assume the role of savior and mediator and priest and head of the church when Jesus is the only savior and mediator and priest and head of the church...living in and thru believers to this day.

  • Dod you have a Father I assume your not a test tube baby so what do you say to him on Father Day?

  • @soulsurcher all you have to do is bring the "and of The Son" part lower onto your stomach:)

  • Did you know that in making the sign of the cross you are actually making an upside cross. The upside cross is used to deride Christ and his people. "Come out from among them and be ye seperate saith the Lord"

  • Please St. Padre Pio......please ask our Lord to heal my abdomen so that I may feel healthy again, I am so desperate, scared and exhausted from suffering.....please..... E.
