Kit #28 in the Gakken Otona no Kagaku (Adult Science) series, the Edo Clock. The Edo Clock is essentially a 2-pendulum mechanical clock used from roughly the 1600's to the mid-1800's in Japan to track the amount of daylight remaining. Because the length of the day changes with the seasons, the clocks needed to be recalibrated every 10 days or so, generally when the clock was rewound. Some of the designs were weight-driven; this one is spring-driven. There was also a bell mounted on top of the clock that would be rung once an hour. The Gakken modification is to add a leaf switch to be connected to the Japanino kit (#27). The Japanino can then drive a servo to swing a metal rod to hit an optional bell. In my case, I took one of the sound chips from a musical greeting card, and connected the power line from ground to one of the Japanino's digital output pins. And, I modified Jeff Miller's Arduino clock sketch to make a digital version of the Edo Clock.
Nice!
