Since arriving in the USA, I've heard about the Philly cheese steak sandwich. Many people have told me that in order to truly experience Philly I must taste a cheese steak with fried onions. Since cheese steaks seem to be a Philly culinary speciality, I decided to start at the eating establishment of Geno's Steaks (http://www.genosteaks.com/) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLNXFzU6bCA) on 9th Street in Philadelphia, PA. It's in an area which is still known as the Italian Market (http://italianmarketphilly.org) since many Italian immigrants settled in this part of the city during the 20th century. Today, there seems to be a change in demographics taking place there with many shops run by Mexican or Asian immigrants and catering to their particular ethnic tastes.

  • Pat's and Geno's...tourist traps, pure crap, and high-priced crap at that. Try Tony Luke's or Dalessandro's if you want to see what a cheesesteak should taste like.

  • @RickC50 I didn't actually have a cheese steak there but I did have pizza at Lorenzo's

  • @allatek Cheesesteaks are wonderful. I just get frustrated when I see the frequent posts about Pat's vs. Geno's. Unfortunately they are among the most mediocre examples of the Philadelphia cheesesteaks but appear to be the only places out-of-towners hear about. Most steak and hoagie shops in the city and suburbs produce much better fare than Pat's and Geno's.

  • @RickC50 Thanks for the advice. I'll actually be returning to the 9th St. Market this coming Saturday morning to buy produce and maybe fish.

  • @allatek I actually love eating at Lorenzo's. Old 70's Philly feel.

  • @allatek God speaks all languages, so does the Devil. Hopefully he's not with the Devil. I think the Devil would pretend only to speak one language just to torture people.

  • @Iceland1944 The owner of Geno's, shown in the window photo you talk about, actually died 2 months ago. I wonder if God speaks only English

  • AHHHH, I SO HATE THE LIE THEY PRODUCE ABOUT GENO'S AND PATS HAVING THE BEST CHEESESTEAK, THEY DO NOT AND STILL DONT, THE BEST CHEESE STEAKS WITH MUSHROOM, PEPPERS,ONIONS AND OLIVE OIL, IS FOUND IN THE HOOD AT A HOGIE CITY,OR A CORNER STORE, MAD GREEKS CHEESE STEAKS ARE WAY BETTER THAN PATS OR GENO,thANK YOU, BORN AND RAISED IN PHILADELPHIA
