I think in Elizabeth's case, she chose to be married to England, rather than get close to anyone, although in this adaptation, the one scene which I find difficult to watch, is when William Cecil tells her that Dudley was taken ill and died. Very moving scene that was, and was pretty much the one scene which made me realise that Anne Marie Duff is a very gifted actress. To pull off that level of emotion in a scene, takes real acting skill. Glad I bought this on DVD.

The best treatment of Elizabeth by far. Anne Marie Duff was unbelievably good in this role and showed what a highly talented actress she is. Cate Blanchett's first Elizabeth film was very good, as it had the dark, edgy feel to it, but this adaptation was brilliant. Tom Hardy made a great Robert Dudley. Anne Marie's dark eyes reflect Elizabeth's dark eyes from her mother, Anne Boleyn. One English queen who had to fight for her crown. Mary died childless, or history might have been different?

In my opinion she resembles the Boleyn family a lot- look at the portraits of Anne Boleyn, her mother and Thomas Boleyn, the maternal grandfather of Queen. The other thing I like is the "Irishness" that Anne Marie Duff carries on her face (the actress is of Irish descent), what in my opinion makes her face more genuine. What can I write about Robert Dudley? I think I much prefer Joseph Fiennes in this role, who was a subtle character. T. Hardy seems to be a bit of a common man.
