RIP Walter Cronkite 1916-2009

From Wikipedia:

Referring to his coverage of Kennedy's assassination, in a 2006 TV interview with Nick Clooney, Cronkite recalled:

"I choked up, I really had a little trouble...my eyes got a little wet...[what Kennedy had represented] was just all lost to us. Fortunately, I grabbed hold before I was actually [crying]."

In a 2003 CBS special commemorating the 40th anniversary of the assassination, Cronkite said that he was standing at the United Press wire machine when the bulletin broke and was clamoring to get on the air as fast as was possible. Recalling his reaction upon having the death confirmed to him, he said:

And when you finally had to say it's official, the President is dead...pretty tough words in a situation like that. And they were, um, hard to come by.

  • Governor Connally's hospital message to an aide, "Take care of Nellie" was actually a coded message meaning "Kill J Edgar Hoover", who was widely known as "Nellie", and in Connally's view behind the shooting.

  • @internezzo Interesting!

  • Probably because he is talking about the death of FDR, and Truman was vice-president at this time. You are a nutcase.

  • Bob Trout was the icon of icons keeping cool during so many momentous events- THE "first man" of radio. Interesting story about the D-Day bulletin. They had quite a system in place including a pre-warning that important news was forthcoming from Europe

  • Johnson was such a wicked sleaze behind this. He was part of the conspiracy. Interesting that he refused to use a Bible when swearing in for the presidency. His mistress said that he knew in advance Kennedy would be assassinated that day. And was thrilled.

  • This commentator is not Walter Cronkite. The first commentator here is a man with a first name of Charles. For actual video of Walter Cronkite commenting about the shooting of JFK Google Walter Cronkite JFK Death..

  • Thank you for posting. Fascinating!

  • Don Hewitt rare on air apperance :36 bringing in Robert Trout an excellent broadcaster.

  • What a sad day. When as the world turns

was off tape due to the JFK Assassination :-(

Just like what happen to the 9/11. All programs

was re off the air due to the coverage

  • I remember hearing from a then-CBS hand named Les Schecter that Bob Trout just walked through Manhattan en route to the CBS newsroom after hearing of the shots fired in Dallas, figured he would get as much as he could get from just observing what he saw on foot, and then delivered his report off the cuff.

Trout was the de facto anchor of CBS News just before Ed Morrow, who was just before Cronkite, making him Katie Couric's predecessor six times removed.
