As I read the words to this hymn, their multicultural message connected with me, and I immediately began imagining an arrangement using diverse instruments from around the world.
My inspirations for this arrangement include the music of Paul Halley (especially his "Ubi Caritas" from the album Angel on a Stone Wall, which combines traditional and African choirs), the popular arrangement of the Nigerian carol "Betelehemu," and a setting of psalm 148 by Gustav Holst that loosely inspired my treatment of the last verse, in which the tempo slows and the bass section carries the melody while the other vocal parts provide accompaniment.
