Today in a time of heightened environmental awareness and an increased focus on issues of sustainability, there is a need for our built environment to evolve beyond its current relatively static state. If architects consider nature's ability to adapt to variable climatic conditions as a way to regulate energy use, then the resulting architecture will form relationships with the natural environment that will be responsive to the forces acting upon it offering reduced environmental impact. Responsive architecture rethinks the relationship our buildings take on with their environment and instills in them the ability to actively adapt to constantly changing conditions. The purpose of this thesis shall be to investigate and evaluate the qualative and quantative benefits that responsive architecture can offer in its ability to intelligently adapt, respond, and provide its occupants with a greater degree of control over their environment.
