Fascinating letter from listener to New York City radio commentator Jean Shepherd about his experience as an ordinary soldier with the surrender of Japan at the end of World War II. (There is an error by Shepherd in describing Emperor Hirohito's surrender broadcast as "taped"; it was actually recorded on a phonograph record. Tape recording technology was at best embryonic in 1945.) The letter was read on August 12, 1975 on WOR, New York.
Note: I had an uncle who described a somewhat similar experience.
