The creation of this video work began with a scenario for how the images should develop. After the initial images were rendered, the composition of music began, guiding the visual component to the next stage. This process continued back and forth till completion, making it a truly collaborative effort.

The title Hard-Boiled Wonderland is inspired by the Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami's Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, which describes two worlds that are very different, yet with lingering familiarity.

Daniel and Hsiao-Lan are still happily married after the collaboration.

  • Hey thanks! I never heard of them, so I looked them up and found some pretty killer work. Do you have a favorite album?

  • Amazing.

  • If there were to be a realistic illustration of what a dream reader sees, this will be it.

  • Amazing music, conveying all of the elusive Murakami's sense. Bravo.

  • the record label is 4AD, Olliver Vaugn did most of the record design and the videos. Check out "This Mortal Coil," "Dead Can Dance, "Cocteau Twins," "Modern English," "Colorbox," and "Wolfgang Press." Emigre Graphics magazine #9 was devoted to this designer. you can get the video of, "Lonely Is an Eyesore" for a long look at the video style. H-Gun did Waxtrax Videos for a harder edge.

  • came back to watch it again. i realise my earlier comment might have sounded negative but its not! what i meant by 'painful' and all was that the video had a big impact on me.

    great music

  • the box man is my fav his short stories are amazing. take a closer look at Kawabata's Bell Cricket short story,

  • haha, I actually enjoy Abe Kobo as well. Just finished reading woman in the dunes (great book)!

  • try Abe Kobo, Murakami cribbed his notes! And Abe doe not repeat himself over and over and over and over some more.
