Slowboat to China
rare video where Bert Brandsma still plays a Selmer SA80 alto saxophone.
On A Slow Boat To China was recorded on the Dixieland Crackerjacks first album, entitled : Red Roses For A Blue Lady from 1995.
Selena heard this tecording and liked it so much that she wanted to play it, so the band took it back in their repertoire.

H. H. - bass
Koos Greven - guitar
Ray Vanderhooft - drums
Bert Brandsma - alto sax
Slidin' Selena - trombone

  • I'm glad Selena decided she wanted to play On A Slow Boat to China. She certainly did herself proud! Unusual to see Bert playing an Alto Sax. Does it require a lot less blowing than the Bass Sax?

  • When this one was recorded I just had started with the bass sax, it takes a bit more air, but if you have a good horn the difference is not too bad. You also need a looser embouchure (lip tension ) on the bass.

This month I play alto + clarinet in the Cologne Opera House and there are a few trio recordings on youtube : Bert Brandsma swing trio , where I play alto or tenor.

  • what about the poor guitarist, he didnt get to solo

  • Do you know the worlds biggest guitar lie? : "In the next number I don't need a solo!". Our guitar player is a fan of Freddy Green from the Count Basie big band, only rhythm, no solo's. In setting a swing groove he's one of the best in our country.

    Thanks for listening,

    Bert

  • Hi, Only just discovered your band on YouTube - fantastic! When are you coming to UK please?

  • We played 6 concerts at the Birmingham Jazz festival 1999. We would be glad to return!

    Thanks for commenting.

    Kind regards,

    Bert
