Senator Bernie Sanders said the Veterans Affairs secretary is "one of the most important jobs in the entire federal government, but also one of the most challenging." Sanders, a member of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee, will vote to confirm retired Gen. Eric K. Shinseki, President-elect Barack Obama's choice to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs. At a committee confirmation hearing, the former four-star general and Army chief of staff said he will modernize the second largest federal agency. He also pledged to reopen health care services to middle-income veterans who lost benefits under the Bush administration.
You are on the right track.
When I did the AO class action, the VA was a disgrace. It moved little forward for decades.
The VA motto over their door(s), arches was a humiliation to me in behalf of Sgt C Hartz.

Senator Sanders, you are right on! Unlike your colleagues who use these times for self aggrandizement and promulgation of pet projects you recognize a need for treatment of combat veterans. Dole and company are antiquated and practiced bufoonery while lives are at stake. Murray showcases Walla Walla again but did not refer to the issue of suicides. If Pricipi was never indicted, and Peake acted to help veterans, then why is "Leadership" the priority for Shinseki?
Because the system is failed!
