Le milliardaire Charles Foster Kane, magnat de la presse, vient de mourir dans sa fabuleuse propriété de Xanadu en prononçant un seul mot, « Rosebud ». À partir de cette maigre piste, le reporter Thompson va tenter de reconstituer la vie de cet étrange personnage.
