I respond to a Michelle Tea spoken word piece about Dyke attitudes to FTMs ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGs1L6ELozg ). I link together the exclusion of FTMs, MTFs, bi-girls, male femmes and straight girls.
Queer (dyke) spaces are still governed by a sex binary. The dictum "penis equals man equals bad" still has power.

  • Wow, I love your story. I am I right to assume that you used to identify as a straight girl? You have a unique and interesting perspective I would love to hear more.

it is an odd situation, the transdykes really, really want to be invited to girls night out but they rarely are, while including Transguys shows that they do not really accept their gender identities at a deeper level.

  • This is exactly what various people wrote about in an essay collection called Challenging Lesbian Norms: Intersex, Transgender, Intersectional, and Queer Perspectives (2006, hardcover and paperback). The essays were also in the Journal of Lesbian Studies, volume 10, #1-2. Thanks for keeping the dialogue going!

  • So I watched this video after watching the "female essence" one and I wonder whether part of the reasons why some MTF's engage in the rhetoric of having a "female essence" is to combat the radical feminists who argued that MTF's should not be allowed in women's spaces because they have a "male essence/energy" and in this case I'm thinking of Janice Raymond's and Mary Daly's works.

  • I love that you dress so colourfully!!!

    Very good eye.

Are all the people you take photographs of in the SF area?

Looks like a nice place to be...

  • I find your videos fascinating. This video struck a chord with me, being an FTM.

I've only recently really come into contact with the "queer" community and made friends with women who identify as lesbian, and I have found myself being the token tranny many times. And I have definitely found myself in the bizarre and awkward circumstance of being invited to "girls night out" just because they're okay with me being there because of my genitals.
