For beginner flutists, do you recommend the flute with or without holes in it, for a 6th/7th grade beginning band flutist?

Small children usually have some difficulty covering the holes of an open hole flute. I recommend using hole-plugs and choosing an offset G if they wish to invest in an open-hole.

The weight of a B-foot can also discourage small children from having an easy time holding a flute.

I recommend beginning lessons without the footjoint at all, and starting with "right hand on the barrel" fingering only B, A, and G.

Additionally: Most closed hole flutes with C-foot and offset G are more appropriate for small children. However if a parent wants to invest in an open-hole flute, be sure that the student has a private teacher so the child can learn ease of holding and posture before bad habits in mis-holding become ingrained.

I'm wondering about the thumpport: You said in a previous video, that there's no space left in a flute case once the flute is in & the case closed.

So isn't the flute "squashed" because it sticks out a little of the bottom where the thump port is placed?

continued: What's great about the way the thumbport protects the flute is that it doesn't scratch when it has to come on and off so many times (unlike BoPeps I've tried). But yes, if I tried to close the lid and had forgotten to take the thumbport off, it would make the flute stick up too high, and prevent the lid from closing. So I've never left the thumbport on, even by mistake, in the flute case. Jen

Exactly. The thumbport does not fit my flute case when it's attached to the flute. So each time I put the flute in the case, I remove the thumbport and place it near the c-key, in a space in the flute case. ...cont'd

Pad savers are controversial. Most people think they just stay damp and dirty and re-deposit what they trap back onto the flute's pads.

Flute Flag is much much much better. It's versatile and does a better job. The marker I use is made for Shiny Surfaces. It does not hurt the flute; it wears off or can be wiped off with alcohol. Check with your teacher on that too.

Excellent tips! I'm a flute student and I just have a question about what type of marker to use to mark my flute. I'm very leery of what type to use. Now which is better for flute cleaning: a flute flag or flure pad saver?
