Tyres are the only contact between the vehicle and the road surface. All forces and moments should be transmitted by the contact patch between the tyre and road. One of the most important parts of a vehicle dynamics simulation model is the tyre model as they can be used to predict vehicle properties at an early stage of development. The characteristics needed to generate an empirical tyre model can be measured in the laboratory or on the road surface using a tyre testing truck. Laboratory testing gives very repeatable results as it is easy to control the environment conditions like plank texture, temperature and ambience.

The flat plank tire tester at the Automotive Lab in the TU/e is composed of a main frame, flat steel plank, measuring hub, turn table, axle height and lateral position adjustment mechanism, brake, camber mechanism, trigger and driving motor with reduction gear box. The flat plank can be loaded with tyres of a radius ranging from 210 to 387 mm. The overall width of the track is 250 mm and the track can travel a maximum distance of 5.25 m. The system can handle vertical loads of up to 8kN and a maximum speed of 0.050 m/s. With this test equipment, the forces and moments in the wheel axle can be measured and transformed to those in the contact patch of the tyre. The measured quantities are vertical load Fz, longitudinal force Fx, lateral force Fy, aligning torque Mz, and overturning moment Mx. With the aid of these quantities it is possible to define the tyre behaviour and obtain the tyre characteristics.
