Between the two seasons of "Space: 1999", Gerry Anderson created a hour long pilot for another proposed series called "The Day After Tomorrow". The concept was canned but released as an NBC TV Special as an episode of the children's educational TV Series - "A Special Treat"

Departing from its original destination, Alpha Centauri, the interstellar science vessel Altares moves deeper into space and her crew of three adults and two children encounter phenomena such as a meteor shower, a red giant star and, finally, a black hole, which pulls the ship into another universe.

This was released on DVD along with the "Space Police" pilot by Fanderson. Unfortunately, this release is for members only; which I consider unfair. This however can be found on seperate DVDs on ioffer for around $15.00 or so.

Starring:
Ed Bishop as the Narrator
Brian Blessed as Dr. Tom Bowen
Joanna Dunham as Dr Anna Bowen
Martin Lev as David Bowen
Nick Tate as Captain Harry Masters
Katherine Levy as Jane Masters
Don Fellows as Commander Jim Forbes

  • [1]- Their final velocity at engine cutoff was 0.96 the Speed of Light. By their reckoning the trip to Alpha Centauri would take about 1.25 years. That's a pretty small spaceship to be cooped up together for months on end.

[2]- The rate at which the speedometer increased varied from one closeup to the next, but gave a minimum acceleration of over 110,000 times that at sea level. What a crushing experience.

[3]- I haven't seen this in over 35 years. Thanks. I enjoyed it.

  • @qed100 Tbis really isn't Gerry at his finest - nonetheless I enjoy it plus Brian Blessed is great! Glad to help bring back memories!

  • I was 16 when this played on American TV exactly one time. I like sci-fi from when I was a kid, even the stuff that wasn't all that sharp. Thanks again.
