Here I review two new low D whistles made by Misha Somerville of MK whistles in Scotland; a red MK Pro and a new instrument from MK's "Kelpie" line of entry-level whistles. Both are killer instruments built to exacting standards. Misha Somerville, the founder of MK whistles, was the whistle player with highly acclaimed Scots progressive trad band, Croft No. 5. • a mk whistle looks to have a blade the same as a cheiftain the wind way looks the same as well, only its formed with a split sleeve instead of being milled out of the fipple block.ive never tryed one but they must sound better.

thanks for review and great playing is that a mcggoldrick tune your playing?

    all the best james.

  • @williamswhistlepipes, The MK design is in some ways like Phil's new V3 Chieftains, but it sounds nothing like them. Very different design. I have owned and played several Chieftains over the years. The V3s tend to be very breathy. the MK design has a fair amount of chiff to it (Misha can tweak to your specs) but a lot of strength and complexity of tone. I have never played another low whistle like it!

And yes, the tune is "Ships in the Night" by Michael McGoldrick:)

  • a pleasure. I'm pretty sure they both sound great, but you could make any whistle sound great^^

If you ever come to Germany, I'd love to jam with you. I always liked your whistle videos, but I love your Uilleann pipes...

so, yeah, let's have a jam some time, shall we?

  • @HaileISela,

Absolutely! Germany actually seems like a great place to tour and play shows. I know there are a lot of Irish musicians and Irish music lovers there:)

  • Very interesting, thanks for the review! -Fabian-

  • I love my MK Pro. I have the very same color and finish as yours. This and my Abel are my go to instruments.
