West Bank: Meeting for Peace

Mepeace, a kind of Facebook site visited mostly by Israeli and Arab peacemakers, organized a special dinner at Thalita Kumi School.

Getting to know each other and understanding the meaning of the Jewish Shabbat and the Muslim Ramadan are central to the event.

But why on September 11th?

[Eyal Raviv, Founder of MEPEACE.org]:

"September 11th is an opportunity for us to come together, to show that it is possible for people of different backgrounds to come together, and meet somebody we would never meet, meet someone we would never speak with. And we decided that it is going to be on the 11th of September because this date has so many meanings for so many people."

Not only did Israelis and Palestinians meet for the first time

[Chaya Singer, Student from South Africa]:

"This is the first time I've had the opportunaty to meet with a Palestinian my age. Mohamed is 26, and it was very nice to meet him and all his friends. And to hear about the things I hear everyday about on the news, about Hamas and Fatah and how it affects him on a daily life and his family."

The question remains: are meetings like this one really effective in promoting Peace?

"Well, if we work hard for it and if we believe in it, Peace is achievable."

[Gadi Kenny, Co-Founder of MEPEACE.org]:

"If we want, you know, to avoid clashed civilizations, we have to do it more and more and more."

[Bassam Ghazal, Computer Tech from Nablus]:

"Peace for me is like to see my Israeli friend, and to meet him whenever I want, wherever I want. And to share our experiences and just to live our lives. Because we have the same lives ultimately."

Despite the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, loyal Mepeace internet surfers continue to believe in Peace.
