When my ancestors showed up at Odanak reservation in Quebec, to escape butchering in the French Indian War, they were told to renounce their culture (even their names) to be accepted. Forbidden to write down an Indian name. An Indian was required to convert to Christianity, accept Christian name, accept church wedding if already married. Children were considered illegitimate till this done.

I trace my heritage to a few french names. The rest is family lore.
