Northwestern University student Lisa Jacobson produced this 8 minute video on the relationship between Daniel Burnham's 1909 Plan for Chicago and the bid for the 2016 Olympic games. No Games organizer Tom Tresser is interviewed along with Jonathan Fine from Preservation Chicago.
To say that the Olymics in Chicago is going against the Burnham plan is a bit off base. Daniel Burnham was the driving force for the Columbian Exposition (World's Fair) in Chicago. In one sense the investment drained the resources of the city, but in another sense was the greatest event in human history at the time and provided immeasurable wealth for the city. Remember, "make no little plans they have no ability to stir men's blood". The Olympics in Chicago would stir men's souls.
