In this 23-second clip the Rocketdyne linear aerospike rocket engine is fired in a test stand at the Santa Susana facility of Rocketdyne in Chatsworth, California. Unlike conventional rocket engines the linear aerospike has no bell nozzle to contain and direct the expanding gases. Instead, the gases are aimed down a V-shaped ramp, which makes up one side of the "nozzle," with the side open to the atmosphere allowing optimum expansion at all altitudes while providing thrust.

  • We used to hear Rocketdyne tests in Tujunga years ago in the 1950's. Its a long way from the Simi test site.

  • but how does it work?
