This is a clip of Maynard Ferguson performing the Elton John Song, "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" in the 70's on a TV show called, "The Mark of Jazz". The 2 second skip in the middle of the trombone solo had been fixed by dcwebman. Thank you! I hope you all enjoy Maynard at his best!

  • Sorry to hear about Randy. I had the good fortune to be in a regional high school band festival where Randy performed with us in the late 70's. Never heard anything like him. My son plays 'bone now and I hope he can play like Randy some day.

  • I like how Maynards Face looks totaly chill even though hes going higher and higher. I wish i could play as relaxed as maynard

  • I am not sure my most recent comment was posted. Randy passed away on May 16th. It is reassuring to read that his influence lives on! From his sister, Leslie Purcell Upchurch!

  • Thank you for writing. This is a belated response - Randy passed away on May 16th. It is always reassuring to read how much his work was admired and how he influenced others with his playing.

  • Actually this arrangement WAS published - I have a copy...

  • This is probably one of the best Jay Chattaway arrangements. Its a shame that this was never published. This song is sick!!!

  • Randy is not doing well. He is in assisted living and is suffering from many complications from diabetes. So glad his playing lives on and inspires other musicians. Love You Tube.

  • Hope Randy is doing better.

This might be the best thing he ever did - MF too. A masterpiece.

  • It's great to read the comments on this video.Randy is a personality that has to be experienced to be believed.what an energy and always positive towards me.Helped me out in more ways than I can list here. One of the most gifted trombonists I've ever had the pleasure to work alongside.I will always be a friend,a fan and eternally greatful for all of his good advice and help.

  • Hey - great video! I am Randy's sister. It is great for us to see this since Randy is in poor health and not playing much these days. Randy's son Shawn Purcell is an amazing jazz guitarist. Shawn travelled with his mom and dad with Maynard when he was in preschool. Seems the experience taught him alot about music.
