GB5CQD In Commemoration 0f John "Jack" Binns in North Lincs UK .....Ham Radio Station...Part 1

This is The Scunthorpe Steel ARC special events Amateur radio station to commemorate 100 years to the day of the first CQD , later to become SOS. The first distress call was made by local Brigg born man John "Jack" Binns on the Spark Coil Transmitter on board the RMS Republic on 23rd January 1909.His ship was struck by the SS Florida in thick fog.His swift action via his Transmitter saved over 1600 lives in the open seas of the Atlantic.The first CQD was received by the Marconi Station at Siasconset,Nantucket on the American coastline which alerted other ships to the rescue, making it the first sea rescue by wireless.Jack Binns was born in the small market town of Brigg in North Lincolnshire only around 6 miles from this station, in the steeltown of Scunthorpe.The club station was the idea of local radio "Ham" John Allen (M0JAE) and with the help of Scunthorpe Steel ARC, its members and various local Hams in the Scunthorpe/Brigg area made it onto the Bands at midnight 23/01/09 for the duration of 48 hours operating on the HF and VHF Amateur Bands.The station is running an Icom 740 on 10/15/20 meters, via a 3 element Yagi on a Stru-mech P60 trailer tower,a Kenwood TS480S via wire antennas on 160/80/40 meters.Also a Yaesu FT1802 is in use on the 2 meter band via computer linking to Nodes worldwide.If you read this before Midnight 25/01/09 please give GB5CQD a call.......the QSL card at the end of video 1 will be sent to all stations who call!!!!........Thanks for watching this video.....73's and good DX .........DAVE (M0OGY) North Lincs UK

Cheers Jerry ,thanks for checking these videos out, most of the time when it was noisy the various operators had headphones on , but yes when I was operating on 20 meters (The Icom IC746 to the right).....I found it hard work @ times ....LOL.......A very good special events station for sure.........73's and good DX DAVE (M0OGY) North Lincs UK
