My colleague, Caleb Daniloff, asked me to film his 76-year-old father, Nick, rowing in the 2011 Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. He wanted to give the video to his dad for Christmas, with the idea being to supply some basic race-day posterity footage and enough clean shots for him to examine his technique.
I decided to mount the Hero GoPro camera on his boat, capturing his face and all strokes in the water. In addition to a second videographer, Robin Berghaus, who shot from a bank, I had my wife, Emi, man a camera from one of the bridges.
For my part, I shot Nick at the start, hopped on my bike and pedaled to the finish three miles upriver where I shot him again completing the race.
Caleb's wife, Christine, designed the map and my colleague Dan Essrow helped with the animation. The music is Mussorgsky's "Hopak".
Enjoy,
Nick Ciorogan
