A microtome is a device with which one can make thin cuts of specimens for microscopic observation. The video shows how to make thin sections of a carrot.
@keanhean27 Like anything else in the world, the cost is proportional to the features and purpose. Small users like individuals can get one for about $150-200 dollars (depending on quality, of course). Major schools and hospitals/research facilities can spend several thousand dollars depending on the size of specimens they are working with. Some use cyrogenics to do freeze-fracture speciemens. You can make your own with a little bit of ingenuity.
@keanhean27 Yep. Do a search for "Microbehunter" in Google and check out his website. He has a bunch of
D-I-Y projects for people interested in microscopy. It's not that hard to make one of good quality quite cheaply.

@NorthForkFisherman Yea...is it possible to make a homemade one?

Very cool. Thanks for the video, and also adding the pictures at the end; exactly as I was hoping for.
Also, I'm sure you're careful and can handle yourself fine, but the principle of cutting away from you might prevent accidents better. :)
Thanks for answering my questions on your forum at MicrobeHunter . com. You rock!
