Gameplay from Roland On The Ropes playing on the Amstrad (Schneider) CPC 464 8 bit vintage home computer.

This is not a review, walkthrough, playthrough, or demonstration of my playing ability.
It's more a case of me speaking my thoughts while playing the games, many for the first time, and most for the first time in a very long time... so it's all a little spontaneous and random.
Predictably, as I never practice before recording, I usually play very badly.

Given that I am playing many of these games for the first time, and everything I say is completely off the cuff, you probably shouldn't take what I say overly seriously. The opinions that I express are my feelings at the time, but it's entirely possible that they would be different if I were to take the time to get to grips with the game.

However, given that these videos are intended to show that "first time experience", I believe they have some validity or merit.

  • Your review is hilarious!!! Talking us through whilst you play for the first time. Thanks for this, I borrowed it from someone at school, probably around 86 or 87

  • @peehawkpennell Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Not everyone gets what I'm doing here, as all of my gameplay/commentaries are this slapdash :D

  • I have managed to collect all the artefacts. It's not such a hard game once you get into it. Just avoid the enemies, collect the items, then complete the level.

    My top 5 Amstrad games:

    1. Turbo Esprit ( Like an early Grand Theft Auto )

    2. Exolon ( Awesome graphics )

    3. Feud ( has a great atmosphere )

    4. Gryzor ( Arcade in the home )

    5. Oh Mummy ( A simple, fun game )

The Amstrad is a really nice machine - with a lot of good games. A lot were simple Spectrum ports though.

  • @kingstonlj I have several of those games. Videos of those will be posted here over the coming days and weeks :)

  • Used to love this game!

Just a quick note on the single joystick port. The official Amstrad joystick had a controller port on it, so player 2 would plug his/her joystick into player 1's joystick and player 1 would plug directly into the console.

  • Top tip. Many Amstrad games are far better controlled with the keys. Harrier Attack & this one particularly. We're talking precision, which you didn't get with the old school joysticks. sadly.

  • 1 of my fav amstrad games :) Loving your Retro Amstrad Burst :) (We need a crappy review of Fruit Machine if you have it though :)

  • Amstrad made some special joysticks for the CPC. They had a builtin joystickport so that you could plug in stick number two. There was also joysticksplitters sold that enabled two joysticks on the Amstrad CPC

  • @SteveBenway

You will get a picture that is a lot better through a Amstrad RGB colour monitor or using a SCART-cable on the TV. The monitors had RGB as standard.

  • That looks like a really cool game. I'm totally digging the theme tune! :D

Looks pretty challenging too! Good SWILL!

  • Looks like a fun game to give a try Steve. : )

  • I love the huge square sprite mask behind the player sprite.
