How long would you normally have someone do this movement?

We might do these for a timed block of 6-10 minutes and record how many reps do then try to beat it next week. Or I may just prescribe a certain number of sets and reps. On this particular day we did three sets of 12.

It depends on the situation/ athlete. Sometimes we do something like this as a finisher, other times we do conditioning on off days and other times we do both options.
If you have limited time to train I recommend doing a finisher like this at the end of your strength training workouts.
