`The Day the Music Died`refers to the plane crash in 1959 that killed Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, and Buddy Holly. That was referred to as the day the music died.
He also references to Elvis (The King), Bob Dylan (The Jester), Janis Joplin ( The Girl who sang the Blues), and many many greats in the genre.
The eight minute song is really complex, it's quite the piece. Hope this helps.
