I always wondered why we dint have a china town. Now I know.

All the displaced chinese were taken in by the church going public
.I remember my mother and father telling me they had a chinese man staying in their house for awhile..
They never knew what started the fire, some theorys were that the chinese had hoardes of fireworks stored in their shops, which excelerated the blaze.

WOW! That is so intense. I can't wait to show my Mom and her syblings. They grew up near there and visited to eat and shop in the 50's.
BTW Golden Inn is the best ever in Nan. Especially the SaltyPepperSquid and Shanghai Noodles

This chinatown was located between the downtown area and Harewood, just off of Pine and around Hecate but burned in 1960. The museum had a good exhibit but they are temporarily closed while they relocate to the new Nanaimo Centre.

Although I don't know why the fire occurred, I have never heard that it was an intentional act.
