In that time she was writing songs in her free time. Her normalwork was secretary. Her friend Christin Lavin introduced her written song to Nanci Griffith. She was the first one that recorded this song for her album Lone Star State of Mind in 1987. Soon it became a favourite of her fans around the world.. This song became an international commercial success after it was recorded by Bette Midler in 1990. She recorded it for her album: Some peoples lives. The song came on 2 at the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy in 1991
