When the weather is hot, the inside of the hive can gets very stuffy. The temperature must be maintained for the health of the brood, so many bees take to "sitting on the front porch" in a cluster, or "bearding." This problem is solved by using a screened bottom board, and in extreme heat, cracking the lid, to allow for some air flow. Nice bees.
