I hated that segment, just hated it. Wasn't this (around our house, we call them the Enemas)award show on NBC? After all the money Berle, Hope & Caesar made for 'em, NBC couldn't dig up up a few minutes of tape or kinoscope to present the work of these masters for the younger audiences.

''thank you for the memory'' thats the song the played right?

@Gregg30 1998. Hope was about 95 at the time, Berle about 90, and Caesar about 76. Mr. Caesar is still alive.

@flyjets AMEN! You said it. Today's crop of (ahem) "entertainers" call being crass, vulgar, and condescending comedy.

This is class... especially compared to the group of so-called entertainers we're stuck with these days....

@Gregg30 This was broadcast live on September 13, 1998. Milton Berle would live another three and a half years, dying at the age of 93. Bob Hope would live another almost five years, dying at the age of 100. Sid Caesar is still living, aged 89. It's remarkable that many of the old time stars lived long lives, dying in their 90s or later. This despite the fact average lifespan in their day was 68, and that they had performance stress, still ate fatty meats, got very little exercise, etc...

@slicerprime You're only seeing half of the video. Just before Leno introduces them, they play a 5 minute piece on all the great comedy/variety moments from the 50s. And it's not just Bob, Sid & Uncle Miltie, they touch on Jack Benny, Red Skelton and others. I used to have part of the '98 emmys on tape, but then I foolishly recorded over it with some stupid mini-series.

are they all dead?

@tomasred The Emmys started in 1949, and this was the 50th year, so it was 1999. Berle: 91, Hope: 96, Ceasar: 77. Three giants in the entertainment industry......

Great! Bob was 95 at the time.
