Ohio agent Jerald Tillman founded what is today the National African American Insurance Association some 30 years ago to attract more black professionals into the industry. The group now has chapters in dozens of cities across the country with still more planned. In this excerpt from a recent interview with Insurance Journals Andrew Simpson, Tillman discusses where in the insurance company and agency ranks he sees opportunity for black professionals and appeals to agents to embrace mentoring of young black candidates.

I am in total agreement that there is a distinct need to educate african americans, as well as, other minority groups on insurance, as well as, career opportunities available within Insurance. Partnerships need to be formed between both organizations, community and corporate america to bring about this education.

I agree, there needs to be more education in the black community about insurance and how it can impact black families. Corporate
America is not the only way to provide information about insurance and the insurance industry. Civic groups, Educators, Insurance Agents as well as us the private and public sectors need to share infomation about insurance with our young folks. Many black are very naieve and insurance and its benefits.
