"The Barrow-blades are daggers or short swords forged in Arnor in the early Third Age. They are found by the Hobbits in the barrow of a Barrow-wight and given to them by Tom Bombadil.
(Merry's barrow-blade) being of Númenórean make, breaks the spell protecting (the witch king's) undead flesh and pierces his knee. He falls to the ground, and this gives Eowyn the chance to kill him.
(The blades) are "wrought with spells for the doom of Mordor"."

The dagger was destroyed but it was the weapon that penetrated all of the protective spells that the witchking had surrounding himself. Otherwise she never could have penetrated his defense.
