Good point about the writer / director teams. Maybe Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze could be classes as an auteur pair?
But an auteur (so I've read) isn't just a filmmaker who has control over every aspect of his / her film. It's when they also have a body of work which you can look at a as a whole, and see repeated themes, styles, messages, concepts, whatever! - just something that ties them all together and I don't think you'll find as many writer / director pairs :-( sorry

Whoa, whoa, whoa!
There is a huge difference between corporate made by committee films and director/writer shared films. Look at Network, Patton, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, The Hospital, etc. They are all great films that have shared auteurship.
Why does there have to be one auteur for a film? Scratch that. HOW CAN THERE BE ONE AUTEUR FOR A FILM? To fit this definition, a director would have to come up with every single last artistic impulse.

@TheLove86: "Frenzy" and "Marnie" and "Family Plot"?--those you feel are among his best works? Really?

auteur rocks, and I agree with capra that production line films, made by committee can't really be art. I'm all for the auteur and most my favourite filmmakers fall under that category. In fact, most of the guys who are considered the top guns of filmmaking we're also auteurs

I don't always agree with Pauline Kael but she was right here.

Apart from Frenzy, she is pretty accurate. From 1964 to 1975 his movies were pretty mediocre.
does anyone know when this was first broadcast and under what name?
many thanks

I know it was from TVO in Toronto, part of *Sat Night at the Movies* I think. I'm the genius who came up with the title.
