Remake: Chaos: Battle of the Wizards

A games workshop game by Julian Gallop

A project I've started many times in several language, but this time I'm doing it in XNA using C#. I usually write boring functional GUI apps with C#, so this is a nice feeling, to be making graphical games again, like I did on the speccy, and in DOS using QuickBasic.

This is a short demo of what I've achieved after about 16 hours. No main turn loop yet, but the game world is visualised, with animation, mouse/keyboard cursor, and a spell book for each wizard.

I know the font is wrong, I just needed something to get it off the ground. Making spritefonts by hand is tedious.

  • Thanks fo your feedback. I have put the project on hold for a while (6 months) due to work commitments, but intend to pick it up again soon. The underlying state machine needs to be totally re-written to better suite serialisation (for network game state syncro). As for the graphics, my current sub-system that handles rendering is completely seperate from the game logic, so can be re-written dependant on the device doing it. So yes, you could have some amazing modern 3d stuff, if you wrote it :)

  • I have linked to this video from the Chaos Remakes Wiki, as I'm not sure if there is a more official web page for this remake.

    Good luck with the project!

  • Looking good, you're obviously a talented chap to get this in 16 hours. Chaos needs you I hope you progress this

  • Looks very promising! I still play the original Chaos from time to time on my GP2X and PC-based spectrum emulator at home. I have often thought that a multiplayer remake would be great but perhaps a remake that provides multiplayer support over Xbox live?! Now that would be awesome. However, I wonder how many would actually play it? A lot of gamers care so much about graphics I fear they will care little for the game play, especially if they lack any nostalgia for this classic game.
