John Petters Trio with Trevor Whiting, clarinet & Nick Dawson, piano. Filmed live at St John's Arts Centre Old Harlow, Essex UK on 22nd February 2007.
This is from the Special Magic of Benny Goodman concert. For the drum enthusiasts, I am playing in the style of Gene Krupa - the original drummer with the Goodman Trio. Note the use of the snare drum press roll in the first couple of choruses. In the solo, I follow the melodic structure of the song, using losts of rimshots and single triplets with accents. For information on the press roll see my tuition video which explains how to play it. You may also notice that in the last 8 bar drum break I started to phrase it as a 4 bar break and Trevor indicated for me to add another 4 bars. Such is the nature of jazz! There was no arrangement or written music - it all evolved as we played it.
The trio is available for concerts, festivals or dances. tel: International 0044 1406 365 731 or visit the website where you can also purchse our CD Stompin' At The Savoy

  • That's pretty good ! Just a question : could you tell me the authors ? Is it Benny Goodman ? Some others ?Thanks !

  • the composers were J grey, L wood, A H Gibbs. The Benny Goodman Quartet recorded it in 1937 but the song goes back to the 20s I think

  • Hi man, go on!!!play your drum!!!!

    could not rank high enough

  • Thanks much again for theses details : it helps ! We play it in a country way but I would prefer more jazzy...I have to talk with the band ...

  • that's a very good song

  • Wonderful drunnibg John! If I had stayed in England (I moved to Canada 15 years ago) I would have moved closer to you just to gett some lessons!

  • I am really curious on how to just have another 4 bars added unexpectedly but continue it then come in on perfect time? How do you count that? Or do you feel it?

  • The pianist is amazing!
