Moving right along. New bridge installed. Found that the bracing repair was a big success. Belly deflection very minimal now. Heating the tongue extension free from the top in preparation for steaming the neck off. Removed the 15th fret in the middle of the process because I could see glue sweating up from under the frets as heat was applied. I think the adhesive burned causing the smoke plume and singe mark.My only advice would be to not remove the fret while heating the fret board.

  • Rookie do not follow anything in this video! This is a perfect example of how not to do this!

  • But still a great lesson though! Thanks for the honesty. Kept me from burning down the house... again!

  • Two birds with one stone?... More like two birds with one flaming catapult.

  • To explain why you burnt yer fries: The heat gun is too direction. The ambient heat in the area may have been OK , but it only takes a split second to create what happened to you. That's why a heat lamp or a heating iron are commonly used.Don't try and wing it on such a cool old guitar man. poor boys like us can still get it right !!!

    Happy to help

    Cheers !!!

    Dave

  • @windhorse61

one hole slightly off center is what i do

i would look at as many vids as you can of others doing this.

the water damage from the steam can get you !!!!

have plenty of clean rags close by

    good luck!!!

  • @davey4557 No it seems pretty tight still. I scored the joint in case theres still laquer in it. I'm gonna put a bit of pressure on it when I jig it, maybe it'll pop. Have seen guys use one steam hole and sometimes two. Saw instructions to put the hole in the centre, but thats where the truss rod is! Going to do one hole offset a bit from centre, is this what you do?

  • @windhorse61

Does the neck joint seem loose now that you released the tonge from the body?

  • @davey4557 If you answer your door later and there's a sad guy on your porch with a guitar guts in a bushel basket, you'll know it didn't go well. Cheers Dave, you are my guru.
