Time Commanders is a series of programmes made by Lion TV for BBC Two that ran for two seasons from 2003 to 2005.
It uses an edited version of the game engine behind the real-time strategy game Rome: Total War by the Creative Assembly to recreate famous battles of the ancient world. The battles are replayed by 4-player teams from diverse backgrounds. The teams are unfamiliar with computer games, to make sure their gaming skills do not influence their success. After a brief introduction of the battle, including an overview of military units, terrain and available forces, the players have to develop a strategy and then deploy their forces. Two of the players are selected as generals, who will direct the battle and have access to a strategic map. The other two players are designated lieutenants, the units are indirectly controlled by the lieutenants, who issue commands to program assistants, who in turn use the game interface to control the units.

  • WTF, Romans ALREADY had Praetorian cavs? LOL

  • @jimswe Oh god, he'll rape them all!

  • @ThomasYorkshire It really does when you play it on the hardest difficulty with all the odds against you. I'm 15 and my friend's 16 and we've both studied the seven military classics of ancient China and played Rome Total War ridiculously well. We could probably beat princeofmacedon if the odds were even in any battle. In antiquity, commanders like Hannibal or Alexander the Great were only the best from a small class. The 1% best people at Starcraft could beat Hannibal easily.

  • I feel old, I remember watching this exact episode on bbc.

  • If I had 10000 guns I would have killed 2 million

  • Where is the prince of Macedon when you need him??

  • ..."The teams plan is working"? the team didn't do f all, the computer set it all out for them...

  • Ironic, for once police officers are the ones being charged at by horses....

  • @jimswe that would be overkill.
