the tight defense doesn't always work. like caron butler just did, he blew by his defender with a simple explosion to the basket. there are times when you would want some players to sag off their man so you can get help in situations where there are mismatches. if dallas knew what they were doing, they would isolate dirk on pau and use that post up to fade away jumpshot maneuver which works about 90% of the time.
