Make Brazilian friends and speak with them, ask questions as well (if they speak it correctly), that's the best way to learn.

im very confused about how you pronounce "o" as in 'the'. I always say it like "u".
is it a dialect difference or was I mistaken?

Do you mean when the "o" in alone in a sentence like "o carro está aqui"? In this case you can pronounce it like "o" or "u", most part of the people say something like "u", but when we speak slowly we tend to say "o".
Sorry, maybe it's kind of confusing... it's difficult to explain it wrinting.
