Checked my G5RV antenna against my new delta loop for 40m and could not believe the noise reduction and signals. This one is lower than the G5RV, but signals are usually a couple of points higher. The loop is connected to a 4:1 balun I made myself. Thanks to Callum McCormick M0MCX for delta loop details and Clive 2E0KGV for his balun making details. Make one, they are easy and well worth it.

  • I tried a 10m rotatable delta loop with the loop in a V shape with the wire about 3ft apart , with the balun at the back of the V. Yes it was directional, but not by much. Trying a Double D 2 element beam right now. I have made about 3 directional wire antennas now from the basic Sandpiper VK2ABQ frame. Experimentation is the name of the game. Your ground and surrounding area has a big difference on different antennas. Don't just stick a G5RV up, try other antennas.

  • Hello, sorry I have not commented sooner ! Mine is horizontal and fed from a point attached to a homemade 4:1 balun. This is just under the guttering about 18-20ft up and is roughly North. I have 2x telescoping poles about 18ft high in 2 corners of my garden. I tried a vertical loop and there was too much noise and no better than the horizontal one I have. I have a 34m loop as well, which tunes 17m & 30m. Google 40m loop Calum McCormick, do as he says, easy excellent results. Balun £8 DIY

  • the nice thing about delta loops (from what i read) is that they can sit pretty low and still have a low take-off angle and directivity where the dipole at low height tends to be a NIVS (all or most of the power going straight up)

(please correct me if i am wrong)

i just put up a 20m deltaloop fed for vertical pol with about 3.5m of 75ohm matching stub. swr is about 1:1 on 14.070 and 1.3 on the bottom and about 1.6 on the top. so it's quite a narrow antenna.

    Good vid thanks.

  • pne of the most overlooked antennas in ham radio, dont know why everyone does the g5rv ting when there are dozens of antenna,s that could be built and used giving better performence

  • I'm thinking about putting up a delta loop too for 40m, fed partway up the side for low angle vertical radiation. Where are you feeding yours, does it favor DX vs closehaul, and does it favor a certain direction. Would you describe your balun, too. Model predicts about 170 ohms, and I'm thinking air core 4:1 for weight reduction since it'll be hanging out on an edge vs a corner or center. 73
