There is a shot given called "Dexamethazone" which now lasts 4-6 weeks (or longer) where NO additional pills are given. My cat gets it every year around Jan-Feb and once he gets that shot, he stops coughing within 3 days and doesn't cough the rest of the year. Be advised that every attack not only damages their lungs more and more, but also shortens their life expectancy. Good luck to all the kitties and doggies out there with this nasty condition.
