  • The definition given is completely wrong. The p value is not the probability your results were due to chance. See previous responses

  • @nightowl19972 your explanation of the P value is the clearest I've found. its hard trying to find an explanation somewhere between over simple and too complicated!! the only issue i have is applying the P value to the H0 in the right context because the study I'm doing is a bit funny with the hypotheses because its more of a review of methods. i can work out the P value but its a pain understanding it properly

  • Unfortunately the defintion on the p-value is incorrect. It is a conditional probability, and its intepretation is conditional on the null hypothesis being true. It tells you the probability that you would obtain the result you observed, or a more extreme result, if the null hypothesis is true. To say that it is the probabilty of your findings being due to chance alone is an incorrect oversimplification.
