If you just mandate health care coverage & prevent insurance companies from discrimination on the basis of pre-existing conditions without having a public option you just hand millions of new customers over to the insurance companies that have been screwing everyone around for decades.
Just allowing insurance co.s to compete across state lines would not solve the problem. Insurance companies are exempt from anti-trust laws and their price-fixing prohibitions.
It is in the best interests of insurance companies to get together & keep premiums high, regardless of whether or not they cross state lines, because they can do so legally.
Also, the way insurance companies compete is by being the best at denying claims and dropping coverage if you present a health cost risk.
If the GOP and insurance companies fight the public option so hard you know it must be good for you.
