English is rather good in that it has a (mostly) simple grammar; where is is rubbish is in its written form, i.e. its spelling. English spelling is the most irregular and difficult to learn of all the alphabetical systems. Highly intelligent and educated people often make spelling howlers because it is not rule orderly. We also have high illiteracy rates because of this irregularity. All this has an effect on our economy and on our children's life chances. It is time to repair to our system.

Haha, Europe went through hundred years of shit-hole backstabbing and war due to their incompetence. Naturally, the instruments of war is improved through the process. And with the borrowing of gun powder from China, their technologies of war became much more advanced than the rest of the world. England, being an island, don't have to worry about building an Army. So they spent pretty spent everything on the Navy. Having guns and large ships, they forced other people to speak English. No glory.

@artistwithouttalent They had the largest empire of any country, so their language spread more. As it became more common, more people learned it to become more competitive, so more people learned it because there were more people, and so on and so forth.
(On a side note, this would help to explain the spread of French and Spanish as well.

@devlikin88 Bullshit! It's NOT "popular because of the American media"; few countries on Earth take the US seriously, which is to say, we don't get much respect in the international community. The initial reason for its popularity probably comes down to the fact that European countries were very imperialist, and to this day still are, and one of the most powerful of these formerly imperialist nations was the UK. They forced the subjects of their empire to speak english; thus it spread.
